Charles L. Sargent of Cordova, New Mexico, is one of the most well-respected photographers in northern New Mexico. He is perhaps best known for his images of El Santuario de Chimayo, where he is the official shrine photographer. Lesser known, but equally compelling, are his images of the landscapes of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado and his flower images.
Charles, or "Sarge" as he is known to his neighbors and friends, was bitten by the camera bug early, immediately after winning his first camera by selling magazines while a junior high school student. He continued to pursue photography as a hobby while serving in the Marine Corp and for several years after settling down and raising his family in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains.
In 2003 Sarge began taking photography more seriously. He made the move to digital photography and began to earnestly study both digital photo processing, using Adobe Photoshop, and the works of master photographers. Sarge has become expert in the entire digital workflow. He photographs, processes and prints all images that he offers for sale, using high quality materials to ensure that the images are of archival quality.
Sarge's images of El Santuario de Chimayo are on display and for sale at the Santuario giftshop. In addition, Sarge is a regular at local arts and craft shows throughout northern New Mexico. In fact, his photography has won the Top Award at the Española Arts and Crafts Show in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
